Studio expanded to 1,000 square meters as Saigon team grows to 100+

Virtuos-Sparx is pleased to announce that we have doubled our Saigon studio floor space to meet the needs of our growing team. The Sparx Saigon studio now has 1,000 square meters, occupying a full floor in its downtown Saigon’s office building. Sparx moved into this new facility in December of last year.

The expansion was thanks to a rapidly growing team, boosted by key managerial hires and the graduation of Sparx* first class of animation trainees since being acquired by Virtuos. The next training class is already underway, with graduation scheduled for this fall. “With an increasing number of projects and a growing team, this studio expansion is right on time and will help us keep pace with our growth plan” said Didier Montarou, General Manager, Sparx.

Gore Verbinski’s “Rango” wins Oscar for best animated feature film

By Lisa Richwine

LOS ANGELES | Mon Feb 27, 2012 (Reuters) – “Rango,” starring Johnny Depp as the voice of a pet chameleon who tries to bring law and order to a town in the Wild West, won the Oscar for best animated feature film on Sunday.

Depp voices Rango, who ends up stuck in a desert town called Dirt, where he takes on the role of sheriff and leads a quest to replenish the town’s water supply.

The film is directed by Gore Verbinski, the man behind three of the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies that also star Depp. “Rango” is Verbinski’s first animated movie.

The film features references to classic movie westerns and is filled with sophisticated humor appreciated by adults.

“Someone asked me if this film was for kids,” Verbinski said as he accepted the award. “It was certainly created by a bunch of grown-ups acting like children.”

Asked backstage if he had hoped to win an Oscar for live action rather than animation, Verbinski said: “I’m feeling I’m dreaming right now. I don’t think it matters.”

“Rango” has won a slew of other awards, including a BAFTA and a People’s Choice Award for favorite animated movie voice.

The movie distributed by Viacom Inc unit Paramount Pictures has taken more than $245 million at the worldwide box-office and also features the voices of Ilsa Fisher, Abigail Breslin, and Ned Beatty.

‘Rango’ corrals top spot with $38M

LOS ANGELES (AP) March 6, 2011 — Rango has lassoed the top spot at the box office.

The animated Paramount film featuring Johnny Depp as the voice of a Wild West chameleon sheriff rode into town with a $38 million debut, according to studio estimates.

Rango, which was directed by Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise maestro Gore Verbinski, is the first animated feature from Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects studio founded by George Lucas in 1975.

“The draw for audiences was certainly Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski, but when you look at the reviews, it was 88 per cent positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a level that Pixar operates at,” said Don Harris, Paramount’s executive vice president for distribution. “This is a film that has a shot at being nominated for Academy Awards this time next year.”

Rango is the first feature movie for which Virtuos is officially listed in the credits. The company is very proud to be associated with the first animated feature film from Industrial Light and Magic. Virtuos had a large team of artists working over 9 months to produce many of the film’s hero assets.
